Grace Melbury is eligant, Marty South himely, and in the contrast between them the author explores all the subtleties of female dreams and desires. THE WOOD'LANDERS was one of Hardy's favourites among his own novels, and one can see why. though written shorthy before TESS OF THE DURBERVILLES, it shares none of that book's savagery. Unafraid to confront serious contemporary issues of personal relationships and sexual politics, it does so with an irresistible charm and lyrical power
